I feel nauseated and I’m worried about throwing up the pills. What can I do?If you have prescription medications for nausea (Zofran, Reglan, Compazine) take them before taking your pills. If you don’t, you can take an over-the-counter nausea medication like Dramamine.

I threw up after taking mifepristone. What do I do?If you threw up less than 30 minutes after taking mifepristone, please contact us. If you threw up more than 30 minutes after, the medication has been absorbed and you can take the next medication in 24-48 hours as instructed.

I am bleeding and cramping after mifepristone. Should I take the next set of pills?About 1 in 10 people will have bleeding and cramping after mifepristone. Even if you have bleeding and cramping and think you have passed the pregnancy, you should still take the next medication as instructed.

Can I go to work after taking mifepristone?You can do all your usual activities after mifepristone including going to work, exercising, and having sex. Most people don’t have any symptoms after mifepristone.

What can I eat after taking mifepristone?You can eat whatever you feel like eating after mifepristone. There are no restrictions.

How should I prepare to take the second set of pills?Be in a place that is comfortable for you, ideally with a bathroom nearby. If you have young children, finding help for them is ideal, although many parents use the pills with their children nearby. Some people like using super maxi pads and some people prefer to use Depends for bleeding. You can eat and drink during the process (in fact, we really want you to stay hydrated) so have some food and drink with you that you enjoy.

When should I take the second pills?You should take four misoprostol tablets 24-48 hours after mifepristone. You should take four more pills four hours later.

How do I take the second pills?You should put the pills between your cheek and gum, two on each side. Let them sit there for 30 minutes then swallow the remaining pill fragments with a drink of water. Four hours later do the same thing again.

What can I do for pain when I take misoprostol?You can take ibuprofen (also called Advil and Motrin) before taking the misoprostol or when cramping occurs. You can take four ibuprofen tablets (800mg) every 6-8 hours. If the ibuprofen is not enough, you can also take two extra-strength Tylenol (1000mg) every 8 hours. Do not take more than 4000mg of Tylenol (8 extra-strength pills). You can take a shower, get a massage, or use hot packs to relieve cramping.

Can I use cannabis during my abortion?If you know cannabis helps you with pain or anxiety, feel free to use it. Start low and go slow and don’t use cannabis if you haven’t in the past. Now is not the time to experiment!

Can I drink alcohol during my abortion?Drinking alcohol might make bleeding worse and may also make you dehydrated. If you decide to drink alcohol, take it easy and go between alcohol and water to stay hydrated.

Can I eat and drink while I’m taking the misoprostol?You can eat and drink whatever tastes good to you. We encourage you to stay hydrated so water and Gatorade may be helpful. You may want to eat lighter foods like toast or soup if that’s easier on your stomach.

How much pain will I experience?Everyone experiences the abortion differently. Some people have very bad pain, like the worst period of their life. Some people have only mild cramping. Everyone is different. If you are having pain, please use ibuprofen or Tylenol to help the symptoms! The worst cramping should only last 1-2 hours when you are passing the pregnancy.

How much bleeding will I experience?Everyone has a different amount of bleeding. It is normal to experience heavy bleeding and passing clots that are large (the size of a lemon) when you are passing the pregnancy. The heaviest bleeding should only last 1-2 hours. If you are soaking more than two large maxi-pads an hour for two hours, please seek help.

I have only had a little bit of bleeding and cramping. Is that normal?If you are very early in pregnancy (below 6-7 weeks), the bleeding and cramping might be light. The abortion is still working as long as you are having some bleeding and cramping.

I have had no bleeding or cramping after taking both sets of misoprostol. What should I do?It may take some time (up to 24 hours) to pass the pregnancy. If it has been more than 24 hours after your last dose of misoprostol and you haven’t had any bleeding, please contact us.

Will I see anything when the pregnancy passes?At less than 10 weeks of pregnancy, you cannot see fetal tissue with your eyes. Even after 10 weeks, the fetal tissue is very small and usually wrapped in a blood clot. Most people see blood clots and sometimes some pale pink tissue as they are passing the pregnancy but do not see anything that looks like fetal tissue.

What do I do with the pregnancy tissue?You can flush the pregnancy tissue in the toilet or you can wrap up the tissue with your pad in toilet paper and put it in the trash, like you would with your period.

How do I know if the abortion pills worked?The pills work for 98 out of 100 people who use them. If you had bleeding and cramping after taking misoprostol, your bleeding and cramping are now getting better, and your pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness or breast tenderness are going away, the abortion pills worked. You will check a pregnancy test 4-5 weeks after using the misoprostol to be sure.

I'm breastfeeding. Can I still use the pills?You can continue breastfeeding as usual during the medication abortion process. A very small amount of second medicine (misoprostol) may pass into your milk and to your baby and cause some mild diarrhea. The diarrhea, if it happens at all, is very mild so you don't need to stop breastfeeding if you don't want to. The diarrhea is self-limited and will pass within 24 hours.

When can I have sex?You can have sex whenever you feel ready. There are no restrictions on sexual activity.

When can I start oral contraceptive pills?If you start oral contraception within five days of taking misoprostol, you will be protected against pregnancy the next time you have sex. You can start taking oral contraceptive pills any time after taking misoprostol.
